19th Century Amish Fan Quilt

Western Ontario Amish Fan Quilt.  70" x 74".  Fine worsted wools mixed with some cotton fabric.  Cotton backing.  Circa 1890.

• Combed yarns for menswear suitings are made of wool by rotating metal combs that align the long wool fibers while discarding the short staple fibers.The results is a long-lasting, fine and smooth yarn with a somewhat glossy finish.  
• In contrast to Carded yarn fabrics which are coarser fabrics retaining the short wool fibers and therefore the finished material will be a much coarser wool.
